Initial ideas - Walter Benjamin Illuminations

Initial ideas - Walter Benjamin Illuminations

Expanding on my initial reading and focused reading based on analyse of the purpose, content & context, history and target audience of the book a number of varied initial ideas where generated to gather a wide scope of ideas to refine and develop on.

Initial ideas

Deception
Play around with disguising
Conceal & Reveal
Warped aesthetic works with the idea of how reproduced work loses its Aura

Reflection of the everyday
Stock choice - Coated, Metallic, Silver
Color - subtle connotations or obvious visual representation of reflections
Mirror image shows altered perspective something that also links with the idea of work losing its Aura through reproduction, a mirror image is not the original its the reproduction of the original.
Show everyday routines through abstract aesthetics to show altered perspective - Sleep could reflect the idea of a reflection of reality, warped aesthetics could be explored through surreal and psychedelic visual explorations.

Prediction of modern day theories 50 years ago
Show an everyday task we take for granted, for example freezers, explore ideas of preservation, this could link with the idea of preserving the aura of iconic artwork through visual explorations (Framing for example) Although this is a loose message the book has quite complex theories and I outlined the persona would understand and appreciate these concepts.

Dark & Light tone of voice
Contrast
Works with the visual connotations of "illumination" explore neon colours and contrasts with monochrome
This contrast of Dark & Light could work alongside the idea of showing progression through the exploration and contrast of many elements of the book;
Deception = Warped aesthetics, darkness, roughness, deconstruction
Reflections = Light, smooth, organised structure

"Lithography enabled graphic art to illustrate everyday life"
How technology developed methods of communication
Focus, concise presentation of information
Refinement represents and works with the "Reproduction" part of the essay
Repeat a visual element showing this refinement through change of the shape, for example a pixelated circle to a smooth circle
Line art, represent a complex visual stripped down to lines shows concise presentation of information

Progression
Movement
Building up/Constructing
Progressive color/tone
Gradients
Texture = rough to smooth works with idea of refinement
Pattern
Size
Weight
A series of patterns influenced by everyday life & routines

Translation of Art and its message
Illegibility to legibility works with idea deriving from warped aesthetics with inclusion of refinement to show focus on clear communication
From image to type
Type as image
Image as type
Typographic messages within patterns, an illusion within warped aesthetics provoking interaction and investigation

Expansion on the idea of Aura been lost through reproduction
Dilution represented through
Gradients
Toned down colours
Aura can be perceived as a sense, like a feel. This could be explored through progressive and changing texture as this has tactile connotations.
Bright to light
Aura = Energy show loss of energy through movement to still visuals

Concept to develop on from feedback & further thought
After having a talk with Joe Lindley I narrowed down (and ruled out weak points) a few ideas into a focused concept idea that took aspects from a range of the elements analysed in the book to form a strong proposal for a visual response.

There were a number of points that gave fruition to more conceptual opportunities within the idea generation stage, they all met the focus for the target persona who would digest the visual response with an open mind due to the multiple view points and subjects covered in the book it also allowed me to include multiple influence points within my focused idea.

The main focus comes from the essay "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction" and visualise how aura in physical artwork is lost through reproduction & documentation while creating a sense of tactility to emulate the energy and feel aura of artwork's can have.

Exploration into; tone, texture, legibility, illegibility, construction, deconstruction, contrasts, progression, altered perspective/surreality, warped aesthetics, pattern, color and typography will further visualise other iconic elements of the books content to really cover the broad subjects within the book.
