Pecha Kucha presentation, feedback & progression plan

Pecha Kucha presentation, feedback & progression plan

Presented forward a Pecha Kucha style presentation today, 21 slides operating on a 20 second transition. The slides needed to be quick and concise in the information I wanted to get across. The presentation went quite smoothly I only stumbled on 1 slide, over running on what I was talking about for a few seconds.

I was a little disappointed I didnt have any work to show but as mentioned in the presentation I have got a little bogged down in research and thinking of methods to tackle the Pantone brief - Reimagine your hometown in color.

Here is the presentation and supporting notes for explaining the slides.

1. I want to do a brief for RSA awards, mainly for the ethical values they promote within there briefs that want to make a real difference in areas like environmental friendly design while giving opportunity for quite conceptual responses.

2. Editorial design is a current interest, Penguin also offer an internship wich is a good method of getting a foot in the door in this area of the industry.

3 & 4. D&AD brides offer good external recognition within the creative industry if work is chosen, the pencil awards are cool trophies and support external recognition and online recognition through a vector icon of the pencil to place on your blog.

5. Like D&AD the external recognition from these YCN briefs would benefit potential future work opportunities, the external companies are very well known so this would support external recognition within the creative industry.

6. The briefs I'm going to do are the YCN Fedrigoni Brief, its main appeal to me is the target audience’s are like minded creative so the brief gives me a fair amount of creative freedom.

7. This YCN brief gives me the opportunity to look into 3D packaging design, something I see as an important skill and has lots of considerations to take into account like environmentally friendly printing (like use of vegetable inks) and use of recyclable materials.

8.Not sure which RSA brief to go for here; Fair play is a brief for creating a toy so gives me the opportunity to be quite playful in tone of voice, Human by nature is more serious through its health & wellbeing main purpose. Both have very meaningful potential outcomes though.

9. I see this Penguin brief as an opportunity to be quite illustrative in the use of Typography, Im doing the Freakonomics book so it would be nice to take away that boring and corporate appearance these books often have through illustrative typography.

10 .The Pantone brief I see as an opportunity to explore the digital design a little more, I could look into Animation to be either the sole focus of the outcome or it could support a Branding based project which is a current interest of mine.

15 (Bringing colour in start). I looked into how color could be the main visual point through potential print & digital formats for these favored ideas

Physical use of materials & 3D objects.

16. Branding, with a strong focus point on colour.

17. Conceptual image creation. This uses Norway coast line images created through pixel art, carrying pixel sizes correspond to monetary value.

18. Hungry sandwich club use color really well with there use of simple shapes and geometric animation techniques. This strong focus on color through simple shapes could be carried through the the visual journey through a timeline of Tingley or the visualisation of my ideal Tingley as a child.

19. This is the part im struggling with really so any feedback at the end on how to tackle this would be good.

Capital cities tend to have a color scheme that there known by.
Tingleys quite small so im not sure how I can go about giving it a color scheme.
New yorks colors are yellow & blue, why though?

20.This branding project uses the color as the focal point around the whole project, the yellow comes from Deutsh postal services and is supported by the postage inspired collateral material.

I want to use one color to represent Tingley inspired by an iconic aspect of Tingley with with supporting collateral material.

21. Any feedback on where to go from here would be good.

Mainly on how I can color code a town that doesnt really have much of a starting point to go on.
Best approach in terms of digital or physical.
Any other methods on how to make color the focal point of a project.
Does branding a town seem reasonable or a bit weird? Could it work?

Feedback
The feedback I received was extremely helpful, the main focus been on suggestions on how other creative's have tackled branding a location. Good locations to look at for influence were:
Barcelona
Porta
Belfast city council
Rhyl

Agency's who were involved with some of these and other good branding projects were:
Drum
Hemisphere agency

Danny mentioned the word Tingley is quite an interesting word, maybe seeing if I could get anything from this word to influence some strong visual colour references. Looking at other interesting words within historic and current first hand research will also help influence more ideas.

A suggestion I made to Mathew about analysing the surround area for photographic purposes to inspire visuals made me think that Tingley is surrounded by farms, this agricultural industry may provide a good reference to creating an idea to work from. If not I can take forward the muted down tones and strong use of green from the surrounding countryside.

I wanted help on wether to go digital animation or physical branding, it made sense that I get an initial starting point from further research and seeing where it take's me because if the influence is something quite historic and traditional a digital animation wouldn't be very relevant here.

Progression plan
Look at locations & agencies suggested to influence branding ideas, to extend on this look at city councils.

Look at some word association and mind maps to help tease out some ideas from interesting words like Tingley and other historic and current words (Could come from my first hand experiences like we call the woods "Haigh woods")

Look at the landscape, architecture, shops, and the physical make up of Tingley to get some further ideas on creating a colour scheme and a main point to influence physical branding and its material, current thoughts at the moment is the agricultural side of things.
