What is visual literacy 2

What is visual literacy 2

In this session we played about with the typefaces we brought in from the various production method categories.

From the chosen typeface selection I chose stone produced minion pro an obvious classic traditional sans serif typeface. From our knowledge learnt about type anatomy we were asked to create subtle changed to the typeface to prepare us for our next task.

I chose to extend and sharpen off and taper the serif points creating a more mediaeval looking typeface which has a more old feel which strengthens the stone concept. The A is the example i tried this out on, i rounded off the strokes of the stems within the counter to create a more angular feel on the joints of the
crossbar. I also evened off the stroke to create more symmetry within the letterform increasing thickness creating more consistency.

After carrying out these edits I created a system of lines for my typeface to provide as guides for the letterforms. The top line been the Cap height were the capitals peak, the second the x height were the lowercase peaks, the baselined were all letterforms without descenders rest on, and a line were the descender ends at the bottom.

We learnt that when a typeface is created it is standardly created at 12 points. And when purchasing a typeface this is what size you will get as a standard this is what works to the intended grid format so to speak. (baseline, x height, cap height)
Fonts come in many different styles below are examples of Gill Sands in its different formats.

Leading from these snippets of information I learnt that to call a body of letterforms a Typeface it has to be a collection of characters, letters, numbers symbols and punctuation marks etc. This Typeface is often involved in a type family and have designations of styles like italic, bold and condensed.

A typeface family is a collection of typefaces that were designed as a set intended to be used together. For example Garamond consists of roman and italic styles as well as regular, semibold, and bold weights coming standardly as size 12. 1 pica. Each format be it weight combination or style is called a face.

There are 4 main font categories that derive from font production methods. Wood block type is known as Block, lead as Gothic, Stone as Roman, and bone and sable type as Script.

From my edited letterform I am to form a plan on creating my very own font from my edited minion pro. To define a font as your own 7 fundamental changes need to be made. I will create a plan on how the whole typeface.
