Yorkshire Sculpture Park Visit & Re-use of material

Yorkshire Sculpture Park Visit & Re-use of material

Sources with an overarching theme of location
Henry Moore - Back To The Land
The Henry Moore - Back To The Land really makes me think about ideas of location and the environment when it comes to thinking of an issue to resolve through the exploration of design and message.

Henry Moores work takes an overall influence from Nature, his sculpting emulates weathering stone but has a certain systematic rhythm too the lines within both his sculpting and illustrations, the work he presents within these examples explores the body as a natural form. By taking influence from landscapes and the weathering process he emulates the idea of natural beauty within the body. A perfect balance between how medium emulates a message but also how background influences strengthen message.

The negative space is used to provoke mystery, which links perfect with the physical form and the abstract aesthetic to the sculptures and drawings.

The messages and meaning of this work I take is the relationship between nature, location and society and the constant change and progression is emulated through the emulation of natural weathering while the placement of the sculptures in large open spaces further strengthen this idea of environmental change and its impact on society.

Asha Munn - Fly Away Home
The work of Asha Munn is something that really got me thinking more about location, more so the idea of housing with an expansion of the dialogue between land and society as seen in Henry Moores works. Asha Munn explores the link between society, peoples daily lives and the Natural world with considerations made to expressing ideas of Social different, Social Hierarchy and out primal need for dwelling and housing.

I really appreciate how this series of work strengthens the link between society and the natural world, from what I believe suggesting that no matter what location we are in we are all products of that locations habitat and like the message I took from Moores work considers the feeling and notion of home and it is effected by changing climates.

These changing climates include population growth and subsequent loss of open space with a growing demand for housing but I believe in reality the housing been created is a reflection of the overambitious property developers creating luxury homes that cannot be filled by the people who need them most. New buyers trying to get on the property ladder.

Through bird housing models Asha Munn solidifies the idea of the impact on the enviroment from housing developments while also reflecting the idea of multiple dwellings as a "Human Flock" with positioning of the sculpture been a reflection of social Hieracy. Theres a bird bath on the top which to me represents the wealthy, a dividing board in the centre with housing becoming smaller and more cramped towards the bottom of the sculpture.

What Asha Munn is trying to communicate I believe is that no matter our surroundings we are all equal, a rebellion to the current social hierarchy within society at current. He subtlety represents the focus point of this issue been urban city environments through the application of urban photographs. This further enhances the contrast between modern architecture and natural habitat.

This work although very simple has such a powerful message, I believe this is mainly due to the positioning of the models within a natural habitat with a strong population of birds, the placement creates communities within communities. Through these factors and the birds dwelling here a reflection of the current housing situation and interaction with the natural environment is made while further rebellion on the idea of social hierarchy. When I come to creating a product the process and material this product explores needs to be carefully considered but not only this the distribution method and placement needs to be considered to resonate with a certain target audience relating to solving or raising awareness of a specific issue.

Roger Hiorns - Serizure
75'000 litres of copper sulphate where pumped into a council flat near the Elephat & Castle in London, the way the copper sulphate crystals colonise and group within the abandoned urban dwelling emulate a sense of freedom when left undisturbed, a natural process wich contrasts greatly within its urban setting.

The flat was abandoned anyway and the blocks were been demolished so I believe was an interesting way of preserving the structure, re-appropriating it for another use through this and its placement within a concrete structure influenced by Egyptian tombs within the rural setting of Yorkshire Sculpture Park a sense of contrast and interaction has been achieved. I take from this the way that the crystals colonise and expand, sort of form there own community within an abandoned space a starting point for the investigation of re-using or re-appropriating un-used space.

Making it: Sculpture in Britain - Focus on Medium is message
This exhibition presents a number of works that explore a range of concerns through the exploration of sculpture through considered use of material and process to strengthen concepts and ideas aimed at specific audiences. I can learn and take a lot of influence from these works to inform a well informed investigation with lots of inspiration regarding ways of approaching solving or presenting an issue.

The whole exhibition has quite an urban vibe too it, through the use of recycled materials and salvaged scrap an instant sense of relationship between recycling, technology and machinery is made giving off quite an urban aesthetic and feel.

Nicholas Pope - Fifteen Holes
The use of wood is influenced by its ready and instant availability and references the makers past carpentry trade. Through the alternate aesthetics and forms through carving of the wood an apparent message of spirituality, suicide and society. Quite a deep concept and message I see the sense of spirituality and society through the positioning and interaction the individual structures in a group but suicide I dont quite understand. But his abstract works certainly prove that abstract forms provoke though and further investigation. An important factor when creating work with that focuses on a specific issue.

Cornelia Parker - Fleeting monuments
Cornelia Parker uses the idea of reproduced monuments in the form of souvenirs to reflect how tourists see these artifacts as some extraordinary. Through this miniaturization and re-production of the monument something beautiful becomes something crude and abstract, a ruin of its original product. I believe the use of lead strengthen this dilution of importance, within the big ben examples used here the continuous cast from one mould degrades and the clock face becomes faceless. Losing all personality and aesthetics that make it such a memorable relic.

Multiple interpretations can be perceived through the use of lead too which can reflect an array of issues, lead can have connotations of poison, heaviness, ideas of shelter and industrialization. What I take from this the dilution of heritage and how iconic locations like this have such an impact on a location and its perception to society. This perception can be altered and manipulated through the use of art, medium and message as shown here.

Jean-Luc Vilmouth - 5 Heads
Vilmouth re-appropriates everyday objects to reflect quite cultural messages, throughout history a lot of societies have produced masks. I see the use of quite mechanical and industrial mediums as a way to portray this culture in a way that emulates functionality and usability something important in todays society.

Bill Woodrow - Tattoo
Bill Woodrow recycles materials but not in the conventual way, he finds materials and re-appropriates them by using them in altered contexts to visualize a different message or meaning. He sees any material as a starting point for manipulation into altered ideas.

There was no description I could find on this, I imagine its open to interpretation but I believe theres certainly a strong feel of urban environment, a direct reflection of the location the materials were sourced (classic yellow cab connoting New York) and the powerfull stance reflected within these big city locations through the use of a panther. This is only my perception but I feel a work of art or installation that can be seen to address or visualise multiple issues within a given sector is a sucsesfull outcome. This multi perception is something I would like to explore.

One expansion on this could be seen how African or Indian cultures make use of everything they find due to there poor economic climate, there a much more environmentalist society and have greater consideration to ergonomics and successful re-use of products unlike many people that just dispose of them with no consideration to even proper recycling.

These houses take 7800 sand packed bottles to make, the packed sand makes them equally if not stronger than brick and is a ready available material and by now over 25 of these houses will have been built.

Issamu Noguchi
Issamu Noguchi places traditional Japanese craft with modern day mediums and technology to merge together the old and the new, iconic in the 1950s these Japanese lamps demonstrate the sustainable outcomes that can be created through consideration of modern and traditional. I could take from this the idea of raising awarness of the possibilities of traditional techniques explored within modern outcomes to not only present sustainability but through the use of simple materials and methods mass production of low quality cheap items can be eradicated.

Points to expand on to generate a focus point of investigation
Alternative building materials (Shipping containers, Tires, Silos etc) to expand on the re-use of materials, environmentally friendly and to aid the problem of inaccessible housing.
Relationship between culture, environment and society when it comes to accessible housing solutions.
