Identifying grids in physical publications

Identifying grids in physical publications

To begin putting our knowledge off grid systems and layouts into practice we started out with a basic task of analyzing existing publications in terms off basic grid systems. We kept things simple only including the horizontal and vertical lines that enclosed type & image, we didn't try identify the whole grid system, just the positioning and framework off visible design elements.

By doing this it helps us begin to understand how grids work to keep a certain order and sense off consistency throughout layout spreads. Publications tend to use the same grid framework throughout so I am going too identify the horizontal and vertical frameworks throughout a few of these double page spreads and identify similarities within the layout.

I will then go on and carry this same task out in a few other publications comparing the differences in column sizes. image modules and basic aspects off grid layout and layout composition. I will also begin to identify basic hierarchy alongside this in terms of headers, page numbering, body copy, sub headers etc. This is beginning to put all our theory into practice.
