Questions on type, readability & legibility and colour

Questions on type, readability & legibility and colour

We were asked to gather 5 questions on design areas we have covered. The questions need to benefit us so need to be constructive and informative within the potential responses.

Type
What are the main uses for the common font origins and categories (Block/Bold, Serif/Stone, Sans Serif/Gothic Digital Script etc)

Whats the smallest pt size you can get away with for small document designs like business cards?

Whats the most common type origin used?

When creating a typeface are the oblique/italic fonts drawn out or a manipulation from the regular typeface?

How heavy can a bold font go before the letters in context of a word begin to merge into an illusion of a solid block of colour?

Colour
Do you think its more important to consider colour and its connotations and relevance to design context, or the aesthetics and how the colours work together to look aesthetically pleasing?

What are the most common colour connotations (eg red represents danger)

How does tone and saturation effect the mood off designs?

How do light levels alter colour representations? (For example natural light and artificial light)

Advantages of one colour designs vs multiple colour designs?

Readability & Legibility
What makes a letterform legible?

How does the amount of body-copy effect readability?

How does the weight off glyphs effect legibility?

How does things like kerning, tracking and line spacing effect readability?

How does colour effect legibility and readability of bodies of text and individual glyphs?
