Content arrangement thumbnail session

Content arrangement thumbnail session

Todays session we took our initial thumbnails into actual physical scale. The DPS needs to fit on an A3 sheet so I had to lower the dimensions of the square format to 200x200mm. I then created a simple 6 column grid to begin working against to mock up my initial thumbnails to scale.

Using content from my color connotation research and taking my initial small thumbnails further.
I chose some content that was fairly image heavy and type heavy to give me a base of the type of grid system and how diverse It would need to be to execute the remaining double page spreads. The initial thumbnail spreads I am working with are the color connotation contents.

As you can see with the type set to the grid guidelines based on the initial thumbnails it does show that there is a little too much negative space.

To combat this i proposed a mockup of larger point size type so it spanned across 2 columns. A much better balance of negative and used space as well as a more symmetrical composition between the type & image on the facing pages. This is refreshing for the eye and allows the viewer to take in the information in a chronological  way by perceiving the header first and following the information left to right like the eye does naturally, the colors come in after the header then the type information follow.

I tried out the scaling up with a more unique composition. Overlaying type over offset images created an interesting aesthetic within a quite minimal space heavy canvas. It does work though it creates a nice contrast between subtlety and visual business so to speak. The angled header also makes a more abstract use of the space within the first page. These type & image manipulations and compositions create a more visual response with less negative space been emulated but doesn't cause fatigue to the eye due to it been overwhelming. The way hierarchy works here is the eye bounces around the design due to the abstract positioning and overlaid type over the color blocks. The intended use would be to reverse out the type that overlaid the color blocks creating a contrast in typography colors.

To progress on from this we will begin to Mac up our to scale thumbnails and any visual issues that arise go back and forth between paper based thumb nailing and mac based layout testing to achieve a successfully communicated body of information and visuals. If we feel we need more versatility to a grid upping the grid system to a 12 column will help and this is something I will be doing.
